Drow Name Generator
To Generate Personal Names:
* Roll 1d10 on Table 1 below & follow the directions the table gives you
For instance, if we roll a d10 and get a 4, then Table 1 tells us to roll once on Table 2, and twice on Table 3. We then roll 1d100 (commonly known as percentile dice) on Table 2. If we get a 1, then the name will start with Akor for a female, or Alak for a male. We then roll 1d100 on Table 3 twice. Say we come up with 60 (rae/rar) and 72 (tana/ton)
* Arrange the name fragments as you'd like * If you don't like the definitions of the name fragments, switch them around and/or drop one of them
If we are making a female character, we begin with Akor and can add rae or tana however we wish. Akortanarae (Ah-kor-tana-ray) isn't as easy on the tongue, however, as Akoraetana (Ah-kor-ray-tana). If we look at the meanings for all three pieces, we see that the name means "beloved secret darkness."
To Generate Last Names and/or House Names:
* Roll 1d10 on Table 4A & follow the directions the table gives you * Arrange the fragments as you will
General Suggestions:
Names can be as long or as short as you'd like, but you might want to keep them shorter so they will be easier to remember and pronounce. When you come up with a good amount of name pieces, play with them a little to see how they will best fit together. If you are having trouble making a name sound good, try adding a letter or two (vowels tend to work well) or an apostrophe between the pieces.
You do not have to start randomly rolling on Table 1 or 4A. You could just pick a style you like, and then follow the directions. Or you could just pick out name fragments you like and put them together in a way that pleases you. One of the nice things about this generator is that it provides meanings for all of the parts, so you can construct a name so that it means something special.
Keep gender politics in mind when you are making Drow names. Females might be given male name parts if they are in a male-dominated society, or if their mothers are feeling particularly mean in a female-dominated society (the female with a male name is rather like the boy named Sue). In traditional Lolthian society it would be rare for a male to be given feminine name pieces - but males might use feminized names in secret societies, especially if feminine names are the ones with power.
Have a look at some naming practices of the Drow to further enhance your Drow names.
